What is the Algar Seco?
One of the Algarve’s most famous attractions (and for good reason!), the Algar Seco Sea Caves are a must for any adventure seekers staying in southern Portugal. A collection of sea- and wind-sculpted rocks and rugged caves dotted with natural pools of clear blue water, the Algar Seco area provides a surprise at every turn.
When here, expect to see everything from naturally sculpted diving platforms to a boardwalk along the cliffs providing breathtaking views. Of all the sights to be seen here, however, Boneca grotto is the most impressive. To reach it, go down a staircase with 134 steps until you reach a large rock to your right and the famous Boneca (doll) grotto, where two naturally carved windows look out onto the Atlantic, reminiscent of eyes when seen from a distance.
While in the Algar Seco area, you won’t be short of things to do, from exploring the caves to going for a dip and even heading out to sea on a SUP board or kayak to see the rock faces from further back. Feeling peckish? Then how about a stop by Boneca Bar or the Bistro Algar Seco for a drink or snack before getting back to exploring?
The Best of Carvoeiro, Portugal
The whitewashed houses that make up the town of Carvoeiro ensure you never forget you’re in the authentic Algarve. A prime tourist spot thanks to breathtaking views, prize-winning food, and impressive sea caves, it’s certainly a unique location. And speaking of winning prizes, just along the cliffs from Carvoeiro is Benagil cave, named one of the “50 most beautiful places in the world” by Conde Nast Traveler and the 15th “Most beautiful cave in the world” by the Michelin Guide.
From Benagil to Algar Seco, taking you through Carvoeiro, a walk along the boardwalk – which includes the option of the seven hanging valleys trail – takes you past countless hidden beaches, each with its own secrets waiting to be uncovered.
